GOJO® Outpatient Surgery Center Saves Time – and Anxiety – for Patient Families
In his short life, 2-year-old Ravnoorveer Atwal has undergone 10 surgeries to help correct his vision. While these surgery days aren’t easy for Ravnoorveer, his mother, Sukhpreet, says the staff at Akron Children’s GOJO® Outpatient Surgery Center do all they can to make the experience simpler – and more streamlined.
“It’s hard for him since he’s so little,” said Atwal, whose son didn’t open his eyes at birth and since has had surgery to remove cataracts. “But before he goes into surgery, they always check everything to make sure he’s ready.”
Instead of doing a pre-surgical workup on the same day as surgery, staff collect all the needed medical information and tests during an appointment up to 30 days beforehand. This approach gives new patient families an introduction to staff and facilities.
It also means families need to arrive only 75 minutes before surgery instead of 2 hours, which helps reduce anxiety in children like Ravnoorveer, who has had to return.
“We understand that there’s a lot of anxiety around surgery, especially for young children,” said Richard Hertle, MD, director of Akron Children’s vision center. “By having a pre-surgical appointment, we’re able to alleviate some of that anxiety, introduce families to the staff here in the perioperative surgical home and talk about what’s going to happen the day of surgery. My own patient families love this approach. They come back to me saying the whole surgical experience was easier for them because they knew what to expect.”
Our pre-surgical preparation approach, which began in the months leading up to the opening of the Kay Jewelers Pavilion in 2015, makes the day of surgery go by faster.
That means families only need to arrive 75 minutes before surgery instead of 2 hours.
Once patient families arrive, they’re ushered into 1 of 7 private pre-op rooms for any last-minute registration before their child goes into surgery. During the procedure, a status board updates the child’s progress – from pre-op and surgery to recovery and discharge – so families stay informed.
“The staff have been awesome,” said Sukhpreet, who’s grateful that her son’s vision is improving each day. “Before his surgeries, Ravnoorveer really didn’t play with his toys and didn’t seem to see them. Now, he loves his blocks and any light-up toy.”
See what families are saying about pre-surgical preparation center experiences:
“The entire pre-surgery team was so kind, they really helped relieve the stress I was having. My daughter never even cried and went back to the OR with no issues.”
“Again, every single encounter on the day of the surgery exceeded our expectations. We could not have had a better experience.”
“Everyone was wonderful. I loved that they talked almost solely to my son, not much to us until later in the appointment. It made him more comfortable.”
